Once you can make the basic strike sound pleasant on both hands, start paying attention to your movements – keep your cymbals close together (but not touching) after each strike, don’t open your hand as far as you can because it will slow you down, tire your hands, and looks a bit silly. This is the way I do the basic stroke – some other dancers bring the cymbals together at different points or angles, and it’s partly a question of preference. This will result in a percussive noise combined with a ring, and is the default for all cymbal playing I have notated here unless otherwise noted (or unless you feel led to practice other sounds).
